Alumni, Faculty, Staff, and Students Connect at IHMRS Events

Each November, hospitality’s major players flock to New York City for the International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show (IHMRS). This year Hotelies can register for the show using a complimentary code exclusively for alumni. SHA events held during the IHMRS will include the 12th annual Cornell MMH Reception and the 12th edition of the Dean’s Leadership Series, featuring a panel on labor relations, cohosted by the Cornell Hotel Society. The CHS NYC chapter will also host its annual IHMRS reception.

Cornell alumni can register free of charge for the 98th annual IHMRS and join 18,000 key industry buyers from around the world. IHMRS takes place November 9-12, 2013, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. Register online at www.ihmrs.com by using the complimentary code Cornell2013.

At the 12th annual Cornell MMH Reception, D.J. Rama, MMH ’96, president of JHM Hotels, will receive the Cornell MMH Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award. The reception will be Sunday, November 10, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the Affinia Manhattan. Event sponsors are Bisnow, Cleverdis, Davidson Hotels and Resorts, Hotel Business, Hotel Management, HOTELS magazine, Hsyndicate, Marriott International, Questex Hospitality Group, The Wall Street Journal, and SHA Centers and Institutes.

On Monday, November 11, the school and CHS will co-present the CHS Annual Meeting and 12th edition of the Dean’s Leadership Series, 7:30-10:00 a.m., at the Grand Hyatt. A panel of experts will discuss “The Future of Hospitality Labor Relations.” Michael Johnson, dean and E. M. Statler Professor, will moderate the event, and panelists will include:

  • John Ceriale P’16, managing director, Prospect Advisors;
  • Maria Elena Durazo, executive secretary-treasurer, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO;
  • Dave Sherwyn ’86, JD ’89, the John & Melissa Ceriale Professor and academic director of the Cornell Institute for Hospitality Labor and Employment Relations; and
  • D. Taylor, president, Unite Here.

In addition to the panel discussion, the event will include a networking breakfast and update from CHS president, Liv Gussing Burgess ’91. Hyatt and the Grand Hyatt New York are title sponsors of the 12th edition of the Dean’s Leadership Series. Later that night, the CHS NYC chapter will host one of the society’s largest networking events of the year—the annual CHS NYC Reception in conjunction with the IHMRS. The event will be held November, 11, 6:30-9:30 p.m., at the Grand Hyatt.
