Between your second and third semesters in the MMH programs, you will be required to complete a summer internship that is eight to 12 weeks in duration. The career management office can help you with your internship search by providing resources and coaching.

Benefits of the MMH internship requirement

• If you’re relatively new to the hospitality industry, or if you’re a career switcher, an internship will provide experience and perspective as you consider your post-graduate options
• You’ll be able to test your assumptions about the type of field you plan to enter; sometimes the most valuable internship is one that helps you decide what you do not want to do after earning your degree
• You will have the chance to apply what you’re learning in the classroom in a real work environment, which will include new team dynamics and challenging assignments—embracing new opportunities is an important part of your career development
• You might work with an organization that may be a career target, so your experience may serve as a long job interview as you show your prospective employer what value you can bring to their organization

You might opt to independently pursue an externship during the winter break between your first and second semesters. Externships, which are entirely optional, last for a few weeks, and typically include observation rather than project execution. Cornell Nolan School alumni are often open to hosting MMH students for a short time as you build your network and learn about career options in hospitality.

The Career Management Office at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business can guide you in developing a self-marketing campaign and a personalized career strategy based on your industry experiences and MMH specialization—recognizing that MMH graduate students are often further along in their careers than undergraduates are. You can also connect with recruiters from organizations that visit Cornell’s campus for informational sessions or interviews. If you choose a career path in entrepreneurship or business ownership, the office can point you in the right direction. Cornell’s resources for entrepreneurs are incredibly valuable.

The MMH program’s smaller class size allows you to form close working relationships with Nolan School faculty. Faculty have not only researched the hospitality industry, but also worked in it, and most keep in touch with alumni long after Commencement. Acting as both formal and informal advisors, faculty can help you decide on a specialization as your plan for your future career. They are also great resources when it comes to making connections in the industry or exploring different job functions related to hospitality.

Even before you graduate from the MMH program, you’ll be part of a professional network of more than 15,000+ Nolan School alumni who serve as mentors and career coaches. They are leaders and innovators in their fields who know the hospitality industry inside and out. You’ll meet alumni when they return to campus as workshop leaders or guest speakers, when you visit them at their organizations during treks and immersions, at annual receptions and events on campus and on-location, and most likely during your summer internship. Not only that, you’ll have access to the Nolan School Alumni Directory as an MMH student and the program curriculum will immerse you in the hospitality industry.
