CIHLER/PIHE: 2020 Virtual Hotel & Lodging Legal Summit (HLLS)

October 21, 2020 - October 23, 2020

Each year an advisory board of top hotel and lodging attorneys from companies and law firms throughout the world, including SHA faculty member David Sherwyn, collaborate to identify the most pressing legal issues and topics facing the industry and recruit some of the most distinguished attorneys in the industry to discuss these issues at this conference.

“We encourage hotel and lodging industry attorneys to join us this October to gain and offer insights on how to confront legal issues presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the worst crisis in the hotel and lodging industry’s modern history.

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated travel-related industries more than any others. Worldwide, hotels have closed while those staying open have experienced record-low occupancies. Group events are being cancelled while bookings for future events have slowed. Leisure and business transient reservations have plummeted. Thousands of hotel entities are in forbearance, many are in foreclosure, and some have already filed bankruptcy. Meanwhile, thousands of industry employees have been laid off or furloughed, while those still employed have faced salary cuts. Recovery from this crisis will require the industry to overcome challenges unique to this crisis, such as implementing protocols to ensure guests’ and employees’ safety.

All of these challenges present associated legal issues. Attorneys in the hotel and lodging industry are navigating clients through uncharted waters, even while facing crises of their own. Many industry attorneys, including past attendees of this conference, have lost business, faced salary cuts, or been laid off or furloughed because of this crisis.

We have planned this year’s Hotel and Lodging Legal Summit to help industry attorneys navigate their clients and themselves through this unprecedented crisis. All but one of our panels addresses issues extending from COVID-19. The conference will be entirely online this year. We have made adjustments to registration fees, recognizing the crisis’ impact on hotel business’ budgets for conferences and continuing education. Attorneys who have attended past conferences and been laid off or furloughed because of COVID-19 are welcome to attend this year’s conference without charge.

Each year, the Hotel and Lodging Legal Summit brochure has featured a cover image of a well-known site in Washington, D.C. The COVID-19 crisis has had an impact on the hotel and lodging industry similar in many ways to that which the Great Depression had on the broader economy. Recognizing this challenge, we have selected photos of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial for the conference website, which we are using in place of a brochure this year.”
