ALIS Law Session: Legislative & Policy Issues Featuring Moderator, David Sherwyn

LEGISLATIVE & POLICY ISSUES: ADA, JOINT EMPLOYER DOCTRINE, NLRB & MORE
With ADA compliance, what are the laws, legal challenges, and lessons learned for hotel owners? How can owners, brands, and operators work together to help ensure that proper regulations are in place, are continuously updated, and protect those people with disabilities? Turning to the joint employer doctrine and National Labor Relations Board decisions, what is the current state? What does the joint employer doctrine mean for franchising? What side should operators and franchisees be on? For hotel owners, what are some of the most common issues? How far is too far when it comes to creating standards? What should brands consider when managing for sexual harassment, safety and security, brand standards, hotel audits, and training?

Moderator:
David Sherwyn, Professor of Law, Cornell University

Panelists:
Matt Campbell, EVP / General Counsel, My Place Hotels
Kevin P. Gallagher, Vice President, Assistant General Counsel, Host Hotels & Resorts
Rebecca Springer, Partner, Crowell & Moring LLP

Under the ALIS umbrella, ALIS Law focuses on current legal matters of interest to hotel owners and operators. While the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) conference discusses the issues and opportunities related to buying, selling, and building hotels, ALIS Law focuses on the “day after” the deal closes and the many legal issues owners and operators face.  Attendees included general counsel teams of hotel ownership companies, management companies, and brands, as well as law firms that advise hoteliers.
