Cornell Securitization Forum in Beijing Draws Industry Leaders, Faculty, and Alumni

The Center for Real Estate and Finance held the Cornell Securitization Forum on Tuesday, July 21, at the Grand Mercure Hotel in Beijing, China. The event was co-chaired by Peng Liu, associate professor of real estate, and Niansong Zhang, MMH ’02, CEO of Ruibaitong Hotel Advisors. The forum’s focus was hotel and tourism asset securitization. Dan Quan, professor of real estate and Arthur Adler ’78 and Karen Newman Adler ’78 Director of the Center for Real Estate and Finance, delivered a keynote address on the role of securitization in the hotel industry. Peng Liu gave a keynote speech on REITs in China’s hospitality industry.

The forum attracted leaders across many industries, which included hotel owners, general managers, travel operators, real estate developers, private equity and investment firm professionals, and financial advisors. In addition, many Cornell alumni were in attendance plus a student cohort from various colleges. Following the forum a roundtable was convened to discuss the current status and challenges facing China’s hotel industry; the battle between hotel chain operators and Online Travel Agents (OTA); mergers and acquisitions in the hospitality industry; foreign investment and global asset allocation; and financial innovation and securitization. This was the Center for Real Estate and Finance’s first event in Asia.
