April 2024

As spring approaches and another semester begins to wind down, I want to again thank the entire board for their support of CREF. This semester we are again hosting several Real Estate Treks including the Associate Real Estate Council’s trip to NYC, the Cornell Real Estate Club’s trip to NYC, and the Diversity and Inclusion in Real Estate Club’s trip to Boston, MA. When our students return from these Treks they always write and thank CREF and the board for providing the resources to create eye-opening and special educational opportunities. These trips add real-world flavor to our students’ education and provide opportunities for groups of students to interact with our alumni and their firms. We will again be asking the multiple student organizations that we support on these treks to provide us with their plans for next fall.

We are also working with the Cornell Philip Payton Society and the Cornell Real Estate Council to support the 5th Annual Cornell PPS HBCU Real Estate Case Competition. In the coming weeks, the case competition finalists will arrive in NYC each hosted by a selected generous and prestigious real estate firm. After having a busy schedule of networking events, these finalists will present their solutions to a case provided by PPS and judged by members of REEC. The winner will receive a cash prize. Cornell and CREF’s ability to create this leadership opportunity for one of our student organizations and for the students who attend these HBCUs is possible because of the support provided by our members.

We are also in the final planning stages of our inaugural NYC Affordable and Workforce Housing Symposium. On Friday, April 26th we will be hosting a group of prominent industry and public sector executives at our 570 Lex campus, where we will discuss today’s challenges and opportunities in this space. We expect almost 100 Cornell students to attend, where they will interact with these professionals during three sessions. In addition, on Thursday, April 25th we will be bringing a set of students to an affordable housing project designed and constructed by CREF member Daniel Moritz and his firm Arker. All of this is made possible because of the generous support of our members.

Finally, we look forward to seeing you at the June Board meeting. This meeting is being hosted by Jeff Horwitz and Proskauer Rose, LLP. I know you are all busy people, but we hope to see as many of you as possible in person. As always, a Zoom option will be available for those unable to attend in person. Your feedback and collective insight about where we should be looking to focus in 2024-25 and beyond is important.
