Greetings from Statler Hall! It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the fall semester, and what a semester it is turning out to be. This fall we are celebrating some important milestones. In addition to the 25th anniversary of our Center for Hospitality Research, it is also the 90th anniversary of the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series, the absolute highlight of the SHA academic program. We have been enjoying a truly wonderful lineup of speakers. For the first time, I am pleased to say that half of our impressive presenters are women industry leaders. We didn’t plan it that way, but when we looked for the leaders making the most profound impact, that’s who we found.
Planning is well underway for the 93rd Hotel Ezra Cornell, with the student leadership board hard at work putting together “the Best Ever” HEC. Mark your calendars for March 15-18, 2018. The theme of this year’s HEC, “A Sense of Place,” is about the essence of service: creating unique, memorable moments. The students would love to welcome you and your guests.
On September 13, I had the honor of attending the dedication of our new Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City. This campus offers exciting opportunities for the Hotel School as we plan ways to expand our presence in New York. Stay tuned for more!
One last bit of good news. CEOWORLD magazine has once again named our school number one in the world for hospitality education. We are building from our foundation to continue to be the premier educator. I believe this top ranking is in part because our wonderful faculty ensure that our graduates are extremely well prepared to be emerging leaders for our industry. Our graduates’ skills and abilities are second to none; by all accounts these graduates are a cut above. Yet this top ranking is due to you as well, and all the support you provide us. We call you our secret sauce, and without a doubt, our partnership with you has been and will continue to be the key to our continued success.
From all of us at Statler Hall, we thank you for all you do for our school.
With warm regards,
Kate Walsh, PhD
Dean and E. M. Statler Professor
