June 30 marks the end of the 2014-2015 fiscal year, and it’s been an exciting time for SHA. We’ve earned AACSB accreditation, launched strategic partnerships in Shanghai and Norway, received gifts to endow the deanship and the Center for Real Estate and Finance (CREF) directorship, and laid the groundwork for a new brand identity, to name a few highlights.
We are a relatively small school within a large university, and much of what we do is made possible by the generosity of our global network of alumni and friends. That generosity was on full display this past March 25, the first-ever Cornell Giving Day—framed as a friendly fundraising competition among university divisions—when SHA came in third out of 22 colleges, schools, and other units at Cornell in overall funds raised.
Over the course of that one day, the school received gifts totaling over $1.13 million, or 16.2% of the almost-$7 million raised university-wide. We’ve put together an infographic that breaks down the totals and tells the story behind the numbers.
It’s worthwhile to distinguish between endowment gifts and other kinds. The deanship and CREF directorship gifts are substantial sums that aim to fund those positions in perpetuity, thereby supporting generations of programs and initiatives spearheaded from those offices. But funds raised through channels like Giving Day provide critical resources that can be allocated as needed to support the day-to-day teaching, scholarship, and operating costs of the school.
Ultimately, the Giving Day results illustrated what we already knew: the global Hotelie network is incomparable, founded on professional camaraderie and a common bond to the world’s preeminent hospitality-focused business program. This fundraising success tells a story of SHA alumni who recognize the prominent role their education played in launching their careers, and subsequently paid it forward to help the school provide the same opportunities to future generations of industry leaders.
Many thanks to all who helped spread the word or participated in Giving Day.
For anybody who missed Giving Day, you can still contribute to the Annual Fund for the 2014-2015 fiscal year until June 30. Gifts made after that date will count towards the next fiscal year. Your support is always welcome and greatly appreciated.
