SHA Spaces & Places

With the addition of the Marriott Student Learning Center in 2012 and the Robert A. and Jan M. Beck Center in 2004, the School of Hotel Administration today combines state-of-the-art teaching facilities with warm and welcoming public spaces. Explore our facilities and to learn more about what our SHA spaces have to offer:

Atrium spaces

There are two Atrium spaces in Statler Hall, the School of Hotel Administration; Park Atrium and Tsai Family Atrium. The Park Atrium is a three-story entrance to Statler Hall. This space is used for receptions and meeting space. The Tsai Family Atrium is the two-story main entrance to Statler Hall from East Avenue. This space is used primarily for student activities and company showcases.

Auditorium

The Alice Statler Auditorium is available for lectures, presentations and other special events. In the Fall, the Dean's Distinguished Lecture Series is held in the Auditorium every Friday. You can see our students dressed in their business clothes as part of this professional networking opportunity.

Classrooms

All rooms contain an in-room computer or , a document camera, connections for a laptop computer, a projector and projection screen, and a whiteboard. The classrooms range in size from 27 seats to 136 seats which foster the small, intimate teaching style at SHA.

Club Room

This room is provided for the use of School of Hotel Administration Clubs.

Computer classrooms

The Binenkorb Computer Center maintains and supports more than 120 state-of-the-art PC workstations in four labs. Its use is restricted to School of Hotel Administration students during the academic year. Additional resources include laser printers, DesignJet printer and a resume printer. The Capital Markets Lab, is optimized for group work and includes two stock market trackers, a document camera and web conferencing capabilities.

Conference rooms

The Sack Family Hospitality Suite is a board-room-style room. When industry leaders visit the school, you will often have the opportunity to meet them in this small intimate setting to ask questions and learn more about their experiences in the industry. The Tower 5th Floor Conference Room is used for company presentations, networking events and offers amazing views of Cornell's campus.

Establishment

Our new space in the School of Hotel Administration is for our refined casual dining restaurant that is staffed and operated by students in the restaurant management course. Establishment opened its doors on September 17, 2012, as the culmination of a multi-semester effort supported by faculty and staff, to launch a student-run restaurant. Positioned as a classroom first and restaurant second, Establishment serves as a hands-on learning environment for students to synthesize foodservice concepts, business principles, and hospitality management theories, and to apply their knowledge in a live restaurant setting. As a restaurant open to the public, our goal is to provide our patrons with a unique and fulfilling dining experience.

Food Lab

The Food Lab is mostly used for the lab component of the Food Service Management, Theory and Practice SHA core course. This course introduces the student to food and beverage operations through three major components: fundamental food composition and properties, food products and preparation, and food safety. Students prepare recipes, menus, and production schedules. Students develop the ability to recognize properly prepared foods by preparing, tasting, and evaluating them. They also are involved in a project in which they create menus, develop and standardize recipes, and complete a plan for a dining event. Completion of a five-hour practicum experience in the Statler Hotel back-of-the-house is a required course activity. This culinary space is also used for various student run events such as Hotel Ezra Cornell.

Group study rooms

The SHA Group Study Rooms allow for students to be able to work collaboratively on projects and can also be used for meetings.

Interview rooms

Our career focused school has eight interview rooms available for the School of Hotel Administration for on-campus recruitment programs. 

Mac's Café

One of two dining facilities located in the bottom of Statler Hall. Treat yourself to something savory and warm. Mac's Café features piping hot breakfast sandwiches, pizza, smoothies, sandwiches made to order and a warm host of comfort foods throughout the day. This is a popular spot to grab a quick bite to eat, or a leisurely break between classes. Cash, Credit Card and Big Red Bucks are accepted.  

Marriott Student Learning Center

The Marriott Student Learning Center, funded by a lead gift from the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, opened in August 2012. As technological innovations and developing curricula change the way students learn, the center provides Hotelies with the equipment and space they need to succeed. The center includes the Nestlé Library, Tsai Family Atrium, Club Room and the George B. Mallory ’54 Student Lounge. The George B. Mallory ’54 Student Lounge is a space for students to socialize and relax between classes. It offers quick print stations and student mailboxes.

The Nestlé Library includes study space and areas for both collaborative and independent study. Students have the ability to checkout course reserves and equipment, reserve study spaces to work on group projects, meet with Teaching Assistants (TA's), and access computer workstations and quick-print stations. Research librarians are available to assist with research needs and grant access to specialized databases including several industry standard financial databases (Bloomberg and CoStar).

The Terrace Restaurant

Make sure you have time to wait on line for the famous Terrace Salads. It's number 58 on the 161 Things to Do Before Graduation. The Terrace is one of two dining areas located in the bottom of The Statler Hotel. Delight in delectable gourmet wraps, burgers, burritos or stop by the Terrace for that first morning cup of gimme! coffee and breakfast to go.  Sit inside or find a table on the patio during those warm sunny days.

The Statler Hotel

Located on the grounds of Cornell University, The Statler Hotel offers a distinct lodging experience. Established in 1950 as an experiment in hotel education, The Statler thrives today as an innovative leader in the hospitality industry. Select students from Cornell's world-renowned School of Hotel Administration work under the guidance of seasoned hospitality professionals. They receive a world-class educational experience while delivering an exceptional brand of hospitality. While SHA students are not required to work in the hotel or the restaurant, about 1/4 of our students decide to work part time during the school year in a variety of positions. All students will complete a shift in the hotel and restaurant as part of their introductory first year core.
