Nolan School Advisors Help you Set and Reach Your Academic and Career Goals

At the Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration, you have comprehensive resources for advising. Advising teams include the Office of Student Services, Faculty Advising, and Career Advising. Our professional academic advisors help you choose coursework, complete degree audits, and transfer credits, among other items. Students needing academic accommodations can connect with the Academic Accommodations Manager to ensure their needs are met. Lastly, Career Advising provides career guidance including access to internships and posted jobs. We are also proud to host Executive Conversations where senior-level executives join Hotelies to advise and inspire both students and faculty.

Faculty Advising

Our faculty excel in helping you define your academic interests and career goals, selecting specializations or areas of focus, and research projects to support them. They assist you in connecting your career interests to the curriculum as well as to industry and facilitate networking with other faculty, staff, and alumni. Your advisor is a valuable resource in anything pertaining to career development, job references, letters of recommendation, internships, and graduate school options.

Nolan School Office of Student Services (OSS)

OSS advisors support student development and help you achieve your academic, professional, and personal goals. OSS can also help students in connecting with University resources to address their individual situations.

Curriculum helps design imaginative and solid curricula to satisfy appropriate Nolan School degree requirements
Facilitation is knowledgeable about policies and processes for practice credit, transfer credit, petitions, curricular substitutions, Nolan School specializations, and other academic options
Listening provides a respectful and confidential space to ask questions and discuss interests and concerns
Connections advises generally about the links between academic work and career goals and makes referrals to university resources for academic support and overall health and well-being
Guidance advises on studying abroad, transferring internally between Cornell colleges, pursuing university minors, conducting research, and other activities
Advocacy supports students with disabilities
Resources is knowledgeable about voluntary, required, and health leaves of absence
Intervention coordinates the Early Intervention program, supports students having academic difficulties and provides case management for students requiring academic consideration or who are in academic or personal distress

Nolan School Registrar's Office

This is where we keep your records for enrollment, grades, and progress toward earning your degree. Contact the Nolan School registrar regarding your degree audit, courses requiring manual add/drop, transfer-credit documentation, advanced placement records, special verification letters, or petitions. Contact the university registrar about official transcripts for an employer or graduate school, standard enrollment certifications, or lost or damaged student IDs.

Nolan School advisors expect you to:

take initiative and responsibility for your academic progress and career development
schedule appointments in advance and reschedule or cancel with sufficient notice
reflect on your goals and interests
regularly review your degree audit
conduct background research on companies and opportunities and prepare questions or topics for discussion

Follow through on advice, referrals, and actions discussed with an advisor or staff member
Remember that every student situation is different and the result of an appointment may be unique; do not share information with others for whom the information may not apply
Take responsibility for your academic progress and career development. Check back with the advisor or staff member with whom you met and schedule a follow-up appointment, if appropriate

Common Academic Advising FAQs

Matriculating first-year students may be able to successfully graduate in less than 8 semesters. If this is of interest to you we recommend taking a minimum of 15 credits per semester and meeting with an academic advisor early on to discuss your options. Transfer students should plan to meet with an academic advisor to determine if this may be possible given each student’s individual and unique situation.

It depends. The Nolan School does not award credit toward HADM core or HADM electives for classes taken abroad. Because these categories make up more than half of the degree plan, studying abroad as a transfer student can be very challenging and is only possible under particular circumstances. Unfortunately, junior transfers are not generally able to fit a semester abroad into their degree plan. We would recommend sophomore transfers meet with an academic advisor during their first semester at Cornell to determine if studying abroad is an option for them.
