If you were to offer advice to incoming first-year students, what would you say?
My best advice is to get out of your comfort zone. As I've moved through my tenure in college, I've made an effort to do one thing each semester that scares me a little: take an intimidating class, join a different organization, or apply for an internship. Each endeavor has provided me with a new perspective, both as an academic student and a cultured individual.
What internship has most impacted your career plans?
When I was 15, I got my first job as a prep chef in a commercial kitchen. I spent the weekends of that year working weddings on seven-hour shifts, and got my first real taste of back-of-house hospitality and what it means to be in this industry. The experience opened my eyes to the level of work that goes into executing a successful event, and I have been passionate about events ever since.
What is your definition of diversity as it relates to your Cornell experience?
The most distinctive element of Cornell, to me, has always been the diverse spectrum of majors and interests that students on campus have. I can meet a new person every day for an entire year, and each one has a set of skills that he or she is working to master and to provide value somewhere.
