The Cornell University School of Hotel Administration (SHA) and Sloan Program in Health Administration in the College of Human Ecology have renewed their collaboration with Health Care REIT, Inc. (NYSE:HCN), in which the company sponsors a senior living seminar at the university.

The two-credit academic course, Operations and Planning of Senior Living and Related Facilities, launched in 2010 with the support of SHA alumnus John Rijos, president of Brookdale Senior Living, and focuses on essential operations and management issues in the senior care industry. The course highlights the benefits associated with incorporating hospitality into the rapidly growing fields of senior housing, Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), and assisted living facilities. Brooke Hollis, executive director of the Sloan Program in Health Administration at Cornell, will teach the course for undergraduate and graduate students.

“Through courses like these, we are expanding education and research opportunities in both hospitality and healthcare. We are grateful to Health Care REIT for providing continued support for this program,” said Steven A. Carvell, associate dean for academic affairs at SHA.

“We are excited to continue our relationship with Cornell University. The seminar provides a great opportunity to introduce students from diverse disciplines to the growth potential of the senior housing industry,” Chuck Herman, executive vice president and chief investment officer at Health Care REIT.

The collaboration with Health Care REIT will also enhance research efforts and facilitate additional recruiting opportunities at Cornell. The Center for Hospitality Research (CHR) at SHA will plan a future research project based on industry data supplied by Health Care REIT. After donating the data, Health Care REIT will be enrolled as a “corporate friend” of the CHR. The company will also have several exclusive opportunities to meet with and recruit Cornell students.
