Updated Wine Cellar Management Tool Available from Cornell

Six years after the original version was released, the third version of the Wine Cellar Management Tool is available from the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR). As explained in the "Instructions for the Wine Cellar Management Tool, Version 3," the application's creator, Gary M. Thompson, has improved the program's functionality, made it easier to use, and fixed some bugs. Designed to assist a wine owner in tracking the status of bottles being cellared, the tool is available at no charge from CHR.

"The purpose of this application is to help a wine owner keep track of a wine's drinkability window," explained Thompson, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. "If the cellar owner methodically enters the necessary information, the tool provides the wine owner with the information needed to promote, open, or continue to store wines in a collection. I think people will find version 3 easier to use than versions 1 and 2. I've also included a large number of cellar analytics that are informative and can be used to help guide cellar management decisions, such as what to consume."

CHR released the first version of the Wine Cellar Management Tool in 2009, and Thompson has continued to refine that application with Version 2 and, now, Version 3. In addition to improved functionality, Thompson pointed out two other benefits of the tool: it is free, and the cellar information is not stored on line. He added that although the tool is extremely useful for people with many wines, it also can help even those with small numbers of "special" wines by helping the owner keep track of their status.
