ABI/INFORM

What is it?

Full-text access to newspapers, and trade and academic journals for all of the business disciplines.

When should I use it? 

Use when you need current or historical full-text articles and industry reports from a variety of sources or when you need historical annual reports.

Bizminer

What is it?

BizMiner produces granular industry statistical reports that provide industry financial analysis benchmarks for more than 5,000 lines of business and industry market trends on thousands more. Market analysis reports are available at the national and local levels down to the zip code. Micro Firm Profit-Loss Reports cover sole proprietorships and start-ups which is ideal for those writing business plans and looking to benchmark financials.

When should I use it? 

Use when creating a business plan, valuation assignment, or researching industry ratios.

Access is limited to a terminal in the library. 

What is it?

Bloomberg is one of the world’s premier financial databases and provides data on equities, indices, commodities, currencies, and more. Information on M&A deals, IPOs, and league tables are available in pre-build and customized screens. BU takes you an online training center with videos and BLP has documents covering top functions.

When should I use it? 

Use to find nearly any type of financial data, including quotes and technical analysis of U.S. and international securities. Bloomberg provides access to leagues tables for underwriters of equities, fixed income, and mergers & acquisitions.

Restrictions

Access is only available via dedicated terminals in Management, Hotel, and Mann libraries.

Students may create their own account. From the login screen, select the option to create a new user account. Follow the prompts and have your cell phone handy to receive an activation code.

Business Insights: Essentials

What is it?

Business Insights: Essentials brings together a wide variety of business information, including company profiles, company brand and market share, rankings, company histories, chronologies, and articles.

When should I use it?

Use to find company histories, brand share, and market share data. Use keywords to search through three different categories: companies, industries, and articles.

Business Source Complete

What is it?

Business Source Complete includes scholarly journals, business periodicals, trade journals, industry reports, and related information. It covers such topics as management, economics, finance, accounting, international business, and much more. It also provide access to industry, market, and company research which often contain SWOT (Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats) analysis of larger companies.

When should I use it? 

Use when you want to find business-oriented articles. Business Source Complete is the only campus resource that provides full-text access to Harvard Business Review (HBR) and McKinsey Quarterly.

Capital IQ

What is it?

S&P’s Capital IQ is a premier financial database providing easy-to-use tools for financial statement, comparables, and sector analysis. Powerful screening and charting features allow you to create list of firms for your job search and target investments.

Capital IQ includes industry surveys (trends, operations, industry specific information on analyzing companies it that space, and ratios) and high-level overviews of industries, financial markets, and regional economies. Ideal for researching companies (both public and private), deals (M&A and security issuance), and private equity and venture capital deals. 

When should I use it? 

Use for researching public and privately held companies, transactions, and professionals worldwide.

Restrictions

Capital IQ is available on dedicated terminals in the Management Library (computers 11 & 12). These terminals include the Capital IQ Excel API/plugin; the Excel API/plugin must be used in-library and cannot be installed on individuals’ work/personal computers.

JCB students may wish to register to obtain a Capital IQ account to use the database at a distance. Enter your Cornell email address and follow the vendor’s instructions. 

Capital IQ Pro (formerly S&P Market Intelligence)

What is it?

News, industry analysis, markets, and deals. Includes in-depth coverage of REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts). 

When should I use it? 

Use when researching real estate finance and/or the banking industry.

Restrictions

Users will be asked to register for an account with their Cornell email address.

CEIC Data

What is it?

CEIC provides access to 1.2 million macro-economic time series and statistics from more than 50 countries. Contains 4 databases – Regional, China Premium, Sector information, and the Daily database. World-wide stock exchange indices are also available through the daily database.

When should I use it? 

Use when you need international economic, industrial and financial trends data. Times-series can be directly retrieved from the database and imported into Excel.

Corporate Register

What is it?

Corporate Register is a global directory of CSR (corporate social responsibility) resources including the world’s largest online directory of company issued CSR, sustainability, and environment reports from around the world.

When should I use it? 

Use when you are trying to find CSR reports of specific companies.

Restrictions

Requires free registration to access reports.

County Business Patterns

What is it?

County Business Patterns provides annual detailed industry information by geographic location.  It includes the number of business establishments, number of employees, and the payroll.

When should I use it? 

Use when searching for top U.S. industries by state, county, metropolitan area, or Zip code.

CQ Interactive

What is it?

Created as a supplement to the popular Case in Point, CQ Interactive provides additional case questions, drills, interview questions and resume advice for preparing for an interview.

When should I use it? 

Use when preparing for consulting interviews to practice case questions.

Economist Intelligence Unit

What is it?

International coverage and access to EIU’s Country Report, Country Profile, CountryData, CityData, and Market Indicators and Forecasts.

When should I use it? 

Use EIU.com when doing research on countries other than the U.S. or when comparing multiple countries.  CityData is especially useful if you need price data (including food prices) on a city level.

Factiva

What is it?

Global news and business information, including company and market research. Provides full-text coverage of The Wall Street Journal.

When should I use it? 

Use Factiva when you need full-text access to thousands of publications, including global news and business information.  Also the best option if you need to search The Wall Street Journal.

Restrictions

Access limited to 10 simultaneous users.

Firsthand (formerly Vault)

What is it?

Career insider guides focused on help for job seekers. Include information on a company’s corporate culture, salary negotiation, interview tips, and more. You must create a personal user account using your Cornell email address to access Vault’s Career Insider.

When should I use it? 

Use when you are job hunting or looking for a tool to help you manage your career.

Restrictions

Students must create an account using their Cornell email address.

Foundation Directory

What is it?

The Foundation Center directory contains information about the largest public and private foundations in the U.S. Detailed grantmaker profiles include information on purpose, program areas, fields of interest, and staff. The database also contains form 990s, awarded grants, and RFPs. Company profiles include CSR information and their related grant giving organizations.

When should I use it? 

Use to create a list of foundations or grants in a particular area.

Frost & Sullivan

What is it?

Frost & Sullivan provides in-depth market research and strategy reports with European and global coverage of emerging technologies in the following areas: Aerospace & Defense; Automotive & Transportation; Chemicals, Materials and Food; Electronics & Security; Energy & Power Supplies; Environment & Building Technologies; Healthcare; Industrial Automation & Process Control; Information & Communication Technologies; Measurement & Instrumentation

When should I use it? 

Use when performing market research for emerging technologies.  Contains some coverage of food industries.

GlobalData Travel & Tourism

What is it?

Travel and tourism market data and analysis, containing comprehensive consumer surveys, alongside industry information on key companies, markets, manufacturers, and financial deals.

When should I use it? 

Use when you are looking for industry reports and news in the areas of global travel and hospitality research.

GuideStar Premium

What is it?

Guidestar provides information on programs and finances of charities and nonprofits, news on philanthropy, and resources for donors and volunteers. Search by name, keyword, city or state, nonprofit type (public charity, private operating foundation, or private nonoperating foundation), NTEE code, or income range. Profiles include revenue and expenses breakdown, contact information, 990s, mission statements, and governance information..

When should I use it? 

Use when creating a list of nonprofits/charities in a particular area or researching specific ones.

Hospitality & Tourism Complete

What is it?

Research and industry news focused on hospitality and tourism, including full-text access to hospitality industry publications.

When should I use it? 

An excellent “first stop” resource, use when you are looking for articles on topics related to the hospitality industry from a variety of sources, including scholarly journals and trade publications. 

Hotel Horizons

What is it?

CBRE Hotels’ Americas Research tool with five-year quarterly forecasts and analysis for hotel segments across 50 U.S. metro areas.

When should I use it?

Use when looking for RevPar, ADR, occupancy rates, revenue, and demand and supply data. 

Restrictions

Access is restricted to computers within the campus network, and requires a current netID (no alumni access).

IBISWorld

What is it?

Provides industry reports for over 700 U.S. industries, and coverage of selected industries on a global scale. Each report includes key statistics, market characteristics and segmentation, industry conditions, leading competitors, risk ratings, industry performance, and future outlook analysis.

When should I use it? 

Use when you need detailed industry information on industries in Canada, China, or the United States.

JSTOR

What is it?

JSTOR contains the back issues of several hundred scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, music, ecology and botany, business, and other fields. It includes the following collections: Arts & sciences I, II and III, General science, Ecology and botany, Business, Language and literature

When should I use it? 

Use when searching for historical academic articles on business and social science topics.

Leadership Connect

What is it?

Directory of major U.S. government, business, professional, and nonprofit organizations. Screen by industry, geography, company size, or keyword.

When should I use it? 

Use when you need to create a list of contacts or locate a contact within a large organization. This tool allows searching and browsing within individual directories or across all directories using single or multiple criteria, such as name, job title, industry, and geographical location.

Mergent Intellect

What is it?

A directory of worldwide business information (using D&B’s Hoover’s data) that enables you to access private and public U.S and international business data, executive contact information, industry research, and the ability to access industry profiles.

When should I use it?

When you are looking to create lists of companies by size, industry, location, and other criteria.

Mintel Academic

What is it?

Mintel Academic produces full-text market research reports for the U.S., U.K., and selected other countries. Mintel reports discuss market drivers, market size and trends, market segmentation, supply structure, advertising and promotion, retail distribution, consumer characteristics, and market forecasts.

When should I use it? 

Use when you need detailed market research from a variety of sectors, including consumer goods, travel and tourism, retail, and food & drink.  To download reports and data, items must be placed in “Export Basket”.

Mintel Global New Products Database (Mintel GNPD)

What is it?

Mintel’s GNPD (Global New Products Database) monitors worldwide product innovation and new product activity in consumer packaged goods markets. Covers food, drink, household, beauty & personal care, healthcare, and pet sectors.

When should I use it? 

Use to search or screen hundreds of thousands of food products by country, category, packaging, price, and other features.

MSCI ESG Direct

What is it?

MSCI ESG Direct measures the social, environmental, and governance performance of nearly 5,000 corporations.

When should I use it? 

Use MSCI ESG Direct to analyze a company’s significant social and environmental impacts. Create lists of companies fitting criteria such as involvement with production of controversial weapons. Download company and industry research reports covering issues such as corruption, emissions, and governance.

Nexis Uni

What is it?

Nexis Uni (formerly Lexis Nexis Academic) is an excellent source for legal research. It also provides access to full-text articles from thousands of publications, including full-text business, medical, legal, tax, or accounting newspapers, journals, and trade magazines.

When should I use it? 

Use when you need to find cases, statutes, or other legal information, or search a broad collections of newspapers and magazines worldwide.

OECD iLibrary

What is it?

OECD iLibrary includes reports and data on the 30 OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries as well as data on more than 100 additional countries. Topics covered include business, development, education, employment, energy, environment, finance, governance, investment, and taxation.

When should I use it? 

Use when you need reports and statistics on international issues such as trade, offshoring, development, and environmental economics.

Orbis

What is it?

Orbis is a financial database from Bureau van Dijk that provides information on more than 310 million companies across the globe.

When should I use it? 

Use when you need to analyze companies, especially private companies and international markets.

Passport

What is it?

Excellent source of international data and statistics for industries, markets, products, and trends. Reports on countries, consumer market sizes, market forecasts, consumer lifestyles, companies, brands, and more.

When should I use it? 

Use to retrieve international data, including reports on specific products and industries.

PitchBook

What is it?

Pitchbook provides data covering the private equity space. Includes information on thousands of private equity and venture capital deals, investors, funds, LPs, and more. Official source of data for the National Venture Capital Association.

When should I use it? 

Use PitchBook when researching companies or trends in the private equity industry.

What is it?

Database of commercial property transactions ($10 million or greater globally and $2.5 million or greater in the U.S.) covering office, industrial, retail, multi-family, hotel and development sites.

When should I use it?

Use when looking for cap rates and commercial property transaction information.

RKMA Industry Publications

What is it?

12 biennial business reference handbooks focused on marketing and the consumer marketplace.

Each handbook includes market assessments and forecasts, sector trends, profiles of market leaders, and statistics. In addition to in-depth analyses, the handbooks include links to hundreds of websites for additional information.

When should I use it? 

Use when looking for market research in the areas of travel/tourism; restaurant, food & beverage; leisure business; or sports marketing.

Roper Center for Public Opinion Research

What is it?

The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research is a non-profit organization that maintains a data archive (1930s to the present) of public opinion polls conducted or sponsored by major polling, media, and public policy organizations such as Gallup, Roper, ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, Pew Research Centers, the New York Times, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. The iPOLL databank offers access to nearly 700,000 survey questions and answers asked in the US by more than 150 survey organizations.

Use when you need information gauging popular opinion on topics such as government and public policy, world and US events, the economy, health, and more.

What is it?

A web-based mapping application that lets users quickly create professional-quality, thematic maps and reports using demographic, business, and marketing data for the United States.

Use when you need demographic and marketing data for a specific geographic area in the U.S. such as a city, county, census tract, or ZIP code.

What is it?

Statista provides access to statistics and studies gathered by market researchers, trade organizations, scientific publications, and government sources on more than 600 industries. In addition to tables and charts, Statista also provides infographics and studies on selected industries and topics.

When should I use it? 

Use Statista when you are looking for statistics visually displayed in charts and infographics.

Technomic Ignite

What is it?

Technomic is the premier database for researching the restaurant industry (including limited and full service) and the alcoholic beverage (beer, wine, and spirits) industry. Find sales figures food and beverages, menus, franchise information, rankings, news, industry publications, and more.

UN World Tourism Organization’s eLibrary

What is it?

A fully cross-searchable, interactive database offering a vast number of high-quality UNWTO publications including books, journals, and statistics in their respective languages. The latest statistical information and aggregated data on inbound and outbound tourism are also included.

When should I use it? 

Use when you are looking for data on inbound, domestic and outbound tourism from any country, as well as on tourism industries, employment and complementary indicators

Web of Science

What is it?

Suite of citation indexes, including the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI).

When should I use it? 

Use when you need to perform cited reference searching, which allows use of a given work as if it were a subject term, to identify more recent articles on the same topic.
