Sylvia Melikian oversees the real estate portfolios that MacFarlane Partners manages on behalf of its capital partners. A member of the firm’s investment and senior management committees, she serves as its primary client contact and also has helped lead its business-development efforts, having raised $2.7 billion in institutional equity for investment in real estate during her 17 years with the firm.
Ms. Melikian has more than 40 years of real estate experience and has worked extensively in property acquisitions, development, asset management, portfolio management and capital-raising. During her career, she has acquired, developed and/or managed more than $10 billion in real estate assets, representing all major property types, in major markets throughout the United States.
Ms. Melikian has served as portfolio manager to some of the world’s largest pension plans and institutions, including the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS), the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, the Alaska Permanent Fund, and the Dutch pension fund PfZW.
She holds the distinction of being the first woman named a partner of the development firm Lincoln Property Company and has held senior management positions with the predecessor entities of both UBS Global Real Estate and Prologis. While with MacFarlane Partners, she was instrumental in the formation of the institutional real estate industry’s first urban-impact venture as well as one of the industry’s first real estate emerging manager investment programs.
Among the properties in which she has invested during her career are Oracle’s world headquarters in Redwood City, California, through a venture with the property’s developer, William Wilson & Associates; The Shops at Columbus Circle, the retail component of the Time Warner Center in New York City, through a venture with Related Companies; and a two-million-square-foot industrial park in Hayward, California, that she developed as a partner with Lincoln Property Company.
