Executive Assistant
Office of the Dean

Kandace Van Gorder has served the School of Hotel Administration (SHA) as executive assistant to the dean for the past 17 years. After a 21-year career at Cayuga Medical Center she joined SHA in 1998, working in the Office of Executive Education as the contract program administrator. There, she collaborated with industry clients and SHA faculty to deliver custom professional development programs on campus, domestically, and internationally.

During her tenure in the Office of the Dean, Van Gorder has provided executive-level support to four deans and their industry advisory boards: David Butler (2000-2005); Sherri Kimes (2005-2006); Michael Johnson (2006-2016); and since 2016, the current dean, Kate Walsh. She coordinates and facilitates the daily operations of the Office of the Dean, manages the logistics and execution of special and highly visible events and meetings involving Cornell faculty, administrators, alumni, donors, students, and industry leaders, and oversees the dean's student assistants. She also administers the Dean's Distinguished Lecture Series, a perennial benchmark of the school's academic program; provides staff support to the SHA Student Advisory Board, Hotel Ezra Cornell, and Ye Hosts Honorary Society; and serves as the dean's liaison and representative to SHA and the Cornell community.

Van Gorder received an associate's degree in applied science from Fisher College in Boston, MA. Her activities outside of Cornell include serving as treasurer for the Spencer-Van Etten Alumni Association, partner in a women's investment group, and book-group co-founder and 15-year member. She and her husband, Don, are Big Red fans, supporting Cornell football, basketball, and wrestling programs. They live in Ithaca.
