Michael S. Egan ’62 has served as the controlling investor of Dancing Bear Investments, Inc., a privately held investment company, since 1996. He is also the chairman of Tralliance Registry Management Company, which owns the top-level domain .travel.
Egan has spent over 40 years working in the travel industry. He started at Alamo Rent A Car, Inc. in 1973, became an owner in 1979, and became chairman and majority owner from 1986 to 1996, when he sold the company to AutoNation. In 2000, AutoNation spun off the rental division, ANC Rental, and Egan was named chairman and served in that position until 2003. In 1980, he founded Certified Vacations, a wholesale travel company. Recognizing and mentoring several young entrepreneurs, Egan engaged in other business ventures including theglobe.com and Nantucket Nectars.
Prior to his many business successes, Egan held various administration positions at Yale University and taught at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is a graduate of the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration (SHA).
Throughout his career, Egan has been presented with many honors. In 1990, he received the Entrepreneur of Year Award, given by the Wharton School Club of South Florida. The following year, the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinelbestowed on Egan the Excalibur Award for Business Leadership. In 1994, he was named “Man of the Year” by the Juvenile Diabetes Association and also received the Golden Heart Award from the American Heart Association. He was also a 1997 recipient of the prestigious Horatio Alger Award.
