CIHLER Contributes to ALIS’s “Day After” Panels

Several members of CIHLER’s advisory board participated in the annual ALIS Law conference, held during the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in January in Los Angeles. As conference organizers explain, ALIS Law focuses on the “day after” the deal closes and the many legal issues owners and operators face.

On Tuesday, January 24, CIHLER Director Dave Sherwyn ’86, JD ’89 moderated an afternoon panel at the ALIS Law Conference. With a new administration in place, what is the future of labor employment relations in the industry? The session provided a look at important employment-related issues during a time of flux and post-election change. The session’s focus included overtime, minimum wages, joint employment, class actions, unions’ overt and covert strategies, and operational strategies like mandatory arbitration. The panelists discussed the law, the pros and cons, and where labor-related matters are heading. Panelists included CIHLER board members: Greg Smith, senior vice president, people services at Interstate Hotels and Resorts; Gregory Talbot, senior vice president and associate general counsel at Marriott International; and Paul Wagner, SHA adjunct assistant professor and attorney at Stokes & Wagner.

Other CIHLER board members speaking at ALIS law included: David Klein, senior vice president and general counsel for Sunstone Hotel Investors, Inc., and Dana Kravetz, managing partner of Michelman & Robinson, LLP.
